Meet the girls, busy
eating weeds and naturally fertilizing our paddocks |
We initially bought a small flock of angora
goats to help us with a weed problem at our last property. They were so
much fun and so successful that we soon had over 300 of them.
Unfortunately we had to disperse most of our flock when we moved house to
a property with fences built for horses. As we gradually goat proof our
current property the flock is growing again. Angoras are very sweet
animals, friendly and easy to manage. They make terrific pets and
lawnmowers (especially our mini-angoras) and their fleece is great for
crafts and home spinning. They fit well with other farm activities,
virtually eliminating the need for chemical sprays and reducing the need
for expensive and unnatural fertilizers. Best of all, they cost
practically nothing to buy or maintain. Our entire flock of angoras cost
less than a single alpaca and our current prices start at $40 per animal. This makes
angora goats a great alternative for people
on small blocks who want a few animals to play with, but don't want to
outlay thousands of dollars. All you need to do is make sure they have
adequate fences, food, water and shelter, that their feet are trimmed
regularly and that they get shorn, vaccinated and de-wormed twice per
year. Much less work than the average pet dog, and the kids are about the
cutest things on earth. |
