When we
decided to buy a new, larger, property, we initially planned on a hideaway
in the bush, complete with trees and babbling brook. When we found out
that Gippsland Equestrian Centre was for sale, though, we just couldn't go
past it. This is no ordinary farm but was originally set up as a training
and education centre by the National Safety Training Group. It comes
complete with two houses, a fully-enclosed stable block large enough to house 12 large
horses or dozens of alpacas and goats, a shearing shed, dog kennels and
yards, secure fencing and a huge indoor arena, designed to hold
showjumping events with up to 800 people in attendance.
In early 2007 we completed some
repairs to the arena and made it available for hire to local riding clubs
and private instructors. It's lovely to see dozens of horse floats in the
yard on the weekend, with people and horses having fun together. We've
also used the arena for farm open days and an alpaca fiesta.
Eventually we plan to add dog training seminars and events to the mix but these are a little way
off yet, with lots of other activities keeping us very busy at present.
Hire costs for the arena are
reasonable and there is plenty of parking and public toilets available. A
small number of secure stables can also be hired overnight prior to events
